Description

Integration in the world trading system is key to improving competitiveness, facilitating innovation and economic diversification, and, ultimately, driving growth and poverty alleviation. As one of the world’s most open markets to developing country imports, a leading advocate of Aid for Trade and a strong supporter of the Doha Development Agenda, the EU places strong emphasis on maximising the positive impact of trade for development.

However, major changes in the dynamics of world trade call for a new approach to trade and development. The rise of the emerging economies and BRICS countries, compounded by the further marginalisation of the least developed countries (LDCs) and low-income developing countries, requires a differentiated approach. Such an approach would direct assistance to those that need it most, i.e. LDCs and low-income countries, while building mature partnerships with emerging economies to tackle important issues in global trade.

On January 27, 2012, the European Union launched its Communication on Trade, Growth and Development, outlining its aim of enhancing synergy between trade and development, what it has done and will do to support greater integration of LDCs into world trade, and its commitment to address broader issues of sustainable development, inclusive growth, transparency and good governance, and resilience to crisis.

Together with project partners Insight Consulting, DS offers support to EU DG Trade in the promotion of its Communication on Trade, Growth and Development, designing and editing materials related the communication, providing input on Communication-related events and forwarding innovative new approaches. The team also assists on the communication on specific tread-related instruments, including the Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) between the EU and the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) countries, where the team assists in stakeholder engagement, liaison with EU delegations in ACP countries and the design of new methodologies for communication.
