Under the "Better Training for Safer Food" initiative (BTSF) the European Union organises trainings in the areas of animal health, animal welfare rules, food law, etc (http://www.btsf.eu). Monitored by the Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC), this DS-led project covers the organisation of laboratory workshops and sustained training missions to improve control of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) and other animal diseases such as classical and African swine fevers (CSF/ASF), rabies and peste des petits ruminants (PPR).

The project aims to provide officials and veterinarians in third countries with the necessary training to develop efficient systems of animal disease control. 18 countries are involved in this project: Moldova, Belarus, Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia, Russia, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Mongolia, Mauritania, Algeria, Morocco, Lebanon, Tunisia, Jordan, Syria, and Egypt.

The project will consist of two main training activities:

  • Six 3-day laboratory workshops to be conducted in Europe for third country officials
  • Over 20 sustained training missions to third country beneficiaries on outbreak management

The laboratory workshops are intended to provide training in state-of-the-art virological and serological methods of diagnosis and other suitable techniques so that participants are in a position to fully apply the techniques in their home countries.

The sustained training missions on outbreak management will provide the competent authorities in beneficiary countries with tools to develop national and regional measures for the management of HPAI, CSF/ASF, rabies and PPR.

Following the successful delivery of animal disease trainings in previous years and building on in-house experience and best practices DS is implementing this

project in consortium with partners Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe), National Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment Institute (NFVRAI) of Lithuania and with the Institute for Animal Health (IAH) of the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Additionally, each of the trainings will be organised in collaboration with the relevant local authorities and in coordination with experts from relevant international organisations such as FAO, World Bank and OIE.
