The seminar was implemented in joint partnership between the General Administration of Quality Supervision Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) and the European Commission DG Trade. The seminar covered the protection of Geographical Indications (GIs) with a focus on the GI sector in China. The conference was an important step for both China and the EU on the path to cooperation in enhancing the recognition, protection and trade in GIs.
The seminar brought together GI experts from China and Europe as well as the rest of Asia, the US and South America to discuss a range of challenges and opportunities. Technical themes included the role of GIs in rural development and best practices in legislative, administrative and the technical development of GIs. Alternative and complementary approaches such as Trademark protection were also debated.
In addition to the panel of distinguished local and international speakers, the seminar brought together national and provincial representatives from AQSIQ, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM), and the Agricultural Ministry, Chinese provincial authorities and European member state representatives. Representatives were also present from Industry bodies and academic institutions.
