The ASEM (Asia European Meeting) Seminar, “The Enforcement of Well-known Trademarks”, funded by DG Trade of the European Commission, brought together delegations from all 10 Asian countries within the ASEM group and their European counterparts. Asian and European IP experts discussed the technicalities and special IP protection jurisdiction of well-known Trademarks, in the context of the Asia market and trading environment.
Most delegations in attendance were representatives of the national Trademark Office of each respective country. Regional experts from Asia and Europe have presentations on the legislative and enforcement requirements for the protection of Well-known Trademarks. The output from the seminar included a joint declaration from each delegation on the need to ensure comprehensive protection of well-known Trademarks and improve regional coordination.
This ASEM seminar proved to be an important contribution to the overall work of ASEM in identifying current shortfalls in IP protection, particularly in SE Asia. It also contributed importantly towards establishing consensus, dialogue and cooperation initiatives between Europe and Asia in combating counterfeiters.
